Canon 5D Mark II Review
Months ago, the 5D Mark II was rumored to be a full-frame sensor, lightweight and compact; with a fast shutter perfect for shooting fisheye photos in the water. It would compete with the large bodied and high-speed 1D Mark III (which I currently use). This was what I patiently waited for. For 3 entire years? [...]
Death by Sunglasses
$10,000 worth of acetate, polarized, Italy, ceramics, plastic, P. Diddy, trendy, retro, bizarre, pink, style, China, cotton candy, gold, silver, striped, mirrored, stainless steel, hip hop, tortoise shell, neon blue, inset logos, and dust. Those words are circling through my head after nearly 2 weeks in my studio staring at halogen bulbs. A big thanks [...]
California Musuem of Photography
Recently I visited my mom at my uncle’s house in Riverside. We arrived at the California Museum of Photography at UCR, but it was closed for renovations! With a stroke of luck the director came to the door and gave us a private tour. We were the first people to see the Leica & Hasselblad [...]
Groundhog Day
Well Groundhog Day has officially come to an end. Nobody dared to mess with my routine. Nearly two months consisting of: Climb a sketchy ladder on the roof in the dark, drink ½ gallon of water, surf, finish the gallon of water, eat, siesta, maybe surf again, eat, sleep, climb on the roof in the [...]
Seeing Double
Pictured is Reef team rider John Maher. I love seeing the multiple perspectives. Looking into the barrel it’s a brilliant blue, but when the sun is behind the curtain it creates yellow and orange hues. Usually those brilliant colors only happen in backlit conditions, like late afternoon Pipeline. However early morning in Mexico almost always [...]

Sunburned and Satisfied
My feet are covered in fin blisters, the fridge is empty, and my bed is full of sand. But these are good things because now the hard drive is full of golden-lit photos from Puerto. The emails are streaming in, companies and magazines are requesting images, and we’re still having a blast! I just realized [...]
Red Bull, new client
“This summer Jamie Sterling bought a beat-up old van, christened it the Magnum Mobile Wave Chaser, and took off to Mexico for a few months. Thanks to the photographic skills of Surfer Magazine photographer Ben DeCamp, the following images are proof enough that the investment paid off.” –Redbullsurfing.com http://www.redbullsurfing.com/photos/2008/10/a-glimpse-in-jamie-sterlings-s.php
Who is El Gato?
I didn’t know who El Gato was, where El Gato was from, or how El Gato managed to date one of the most beautiful girls staying in Puerto Escondido. His name was murmured through the lineup after the wave pictured. I’m not sure this photo will ever get published because he doesn’t have big sponsors, [...]
Surf Photography in 2009: What’s Hot & Not
Comments by Peter Taras, photo editor Surfing Magazine http://www.surfingthemag.com/surfing-photo…r-taras-100908/ After reading this article, I’ve already heard of a few guys selling off their 600mm’s for 300mm’s. Longer lenses are apparently cooler in the water (ex. 35mm, 50mm, etc.), but not on land (ex. 500 or 600mm).
